Different Tile Sizes and Where to Use Them

Producers offer a wide variety of products, from very small 0.5"x 0.5" tiles to large 24"x 24" tiles to fit any home design and meet all customer needs.

Tiles are available in a variety of tile colors, styles, sizes, and shapes, allowing you to create a truly personalized space. The dimensions of the tiles depend on the materials and intended uses, and have changed considerably over the years. For example, hexagon tile has a unique size, different from any other type.

However, while there are standard tile sizes, there are also many manufacturers that manufacture tiles in specific sizes for their internal designs. Producers offer a wide variety of products, from very small 0.5″x 0.5″ tiles to large 24″x 24″ tiles to fit any home design and meet all customer needs. Let’s have a look at different tile sizes and where to use them.

Square Tile Sizes

Square tiles are the most comfortable choice. Most of the tile manufacturers use the following grades: 2 “, 3”, 4 “, 6”, 8 “, 12”, 16 “, 18″, and 24”.

The most standard options for rectangular tiles are:

· 1″x 2″, 3″and 4″

· 2″x 3″, 4″, 5″, 6 “and 8″

· 3″x 4″, 5″, 6″ and 8″

· 4″x 4.5”, 5 “, 6″ and 8″

· 5″x 2”, 3 “, 4″, 6″and 8”

· 6 “x 8”

Where to Use Square Tiles

Different tile sizes produce a different aesthetic and influence how you feel in a room. Large-format tiles, at least 12-18 inches wide or long, are becoming increasingly popular for walls and floors. They can give a classic elegance to traditional homes. There are fewer grout lines, which makes any space more open and clean and gives it a high-end look. This is why by installing large square tiles on the walls of the bathroom, you can give it a more luxurious feel and make it more elegant.

The elegant 12×24 glass tile will look great in a contemporary kitchen, around an outdoor pool, or in a living room. By installing 18×18 travertine tiles, you can add extra appeal to your floors.

Small tiles can add depth to each space or shrink a space, making it more compact. With more grout lines, small tiles are a great choice for showers as they guarantee more traction and slip resistance.

Subway Tile Shapes

Subway tiles are a subset of rectangular tiles that became fashionable in the early 20th century. There are no strict rules for classifying sizes, but these are the sizes of meter tiles that you will find most often.

· 1″x3″, 4″and 6″

· 2″x4″, 6″, 8″ and 12″

· 3″x6″, 8″ and 12″

· 4″x8″, 12″ and 16″

Where to Use Subway Tiles

Right now, the trend is for subway tiles used primarily for wall applications, like kitchen splashes or bathroom walls. But we’re starting to see some designers also using them on the floor.

Sharp white subway tiles defined with dark gray grout used on the wall and floor of an elegant bathroom. By laying the tiles diagonally, the small space appears larger.

Hexagon and Octagon Tile Shapes

Hexagon and, to a lesser range, octagon-shaped tiles have a massive influence on interior trends right now, for walls and floors. They are available in tile sizes of 4 “, 6” and 8″(although hexagonal mode means that we are now seeing even smaller hexagonal tiles);

Where to Use Hexagon Tiles

Large, smooth hexagonal terracotta tiles help keep the “busy” bathroom from feeling cramped and add a rustic charm that combines eclectic styles.

Smaller white hexagon tiles with gray grout add a much more contemporary touch to this bathroom and an additional layer of texture with a somewhat stark aesthetic. The hexagonal encaustic tiles have a sublime design with full lines and give the tile with neutral colors.

Large octagonal terracotta tiles interspersed with square accent tiles give this open kitchen design a more comfortable atmosphere.

Mosaic Tile Sizes

These are usually very small square tiles up to about 2 “square. However, there are no uniform size dimensions. Mosaic sizes start at about 0.5″ x 5″ for mosaics, while ” square and 1.5″ square are very popular. Contemporary tile manufacturers are also diversifying, producing small hexagonal mosaics and round pieces.

Where to Use Mosaic Tiles

As the name suggests, mosaic tiles can be used to create custom wall murals or handcrafted floor tile designs. They are also placed in a field like those of standard tile sizes, usually in the bathrooms. The advantage of this is that it can create texture and interest while maintaining a feeling of flow in the space, especially if the tiles are also used to cover dishes and shower walls.

Mosaic tiles are also often used as borders and accents, and it can help define a space when used that way around larger contrasting tiles.

The round penny pastel mosaics are the perfect match for the old world charm of the clawfoot tub and faucets and Victorian-inspired shower.

Plank Tile Sizes

New tile printing technology has brought major improvements and expansion to wood and stone-look ceramic tiles. Wood-look tiles are available in board sizes that aim to replicate real hardwood boards. However, in general, you are more likely to find shorter lengths than reality, and some manufacturers produce fake parquet tiles that are actually square. The most common plank tile sizes are:

· 4″x12″ and 48″

· 6″x24″, 36″and 48″

· 7″x20″

· 8″x32″, 36″and 48″

· 9″x36″

· 12″x24″ and 48″

· 16″x32

Where to Use Plank Tiles

Shorter plank tiles can be organized in parquet patterns such as chevrons to create additional texture and visual interest. They are particularly suitable for large or medium rooms.

Realistic aged wood planks are extra wide and quite long, giving them more authenticity. With these plank tiles, spaces look very large and spacious.

Black stone-looking tiles are unusual for cutting into short planks and then laying in chevrons; the pattern is enhanced with light gray grout and accentuates this minimalist urban interior. The shorter lengths of the plank tiles make the overall look less authentic, but allow for greater color variations, adding visual interest and reflecting the tile border colors on the walls.
