The Exalted Orb is a key aspect of the economy in Path of Exile.
A feature that is capable of making Path of Exile really stand out from other similar titles is the currency system. The way in which PoE currency works shies away from the usual option of gold and coins for orbs, scrolls and other items. A particular form of currency that’s of interest is the Exalted Orb, especially when you consider the value that it has attached to it.
What is an Exalted Orb?
The Exalted Orb is a currency that you should certainly be looking into collecting. This is a form of currency that is able to enhance any rare pieces of equipment that you have, adding a new and random affix to it. When you are trading with other players using PoE currency for items, the Exalted Orb will be one of the most common forms of currency that will be used. As well as the Exalted Orb, you will also be using Chaos Orbs, which have less value than Exalted. There is a higher value alternative to the Exalted Orb too, such as the Mirror of Kalandra.
How to Get Them
To obtain your own orbs, you have a few different methods to choose from. Exalted Orbs can be acquired by slaying monsters, who can potentially drop them. There will also be places such as chests and containers where you can pick up some handy Exalts.
Those aren’t the only places that you can get them either. You can expect them to drop from Arcanist’s Strongboxes too, plus recipes such as beastcrafting can also bag you these orbs. If you want to obtain the orbs in a non-profitable way, then there is a vendor recipe that you can use, though you will need to have the Mirror of Kalandra currency. However, this is the rarest currency in the whole game, so it will be hard to come by. When you do have it, you can then downgrade it with the recipe to get Exalted orbs.
There is also a way to get them indirect through a vendor recipe. Along with an Exalted Shard, you can then put them together to make the orb that you’re looking for. That said, given that influenced items are involved with the ingredients, you aren’t likely to make much profit. You could potentially get more out of trading Exalted Shards in trade leagues instead.
Farming the Gilded Fossil in the Azurite Mine does give you a chance of getting an Exalted Orb. There is a small chance that you have an implicit item that can be sold to vendors, resulting in you obtaining a single Exalted Orb. This would involve you using the fossil to start crafting an item, though you can’t actually see the price.
How to Spend Them
It will soon be apparent to new players the vital role that Exalted Orbs play in the economy of Path of Exile. The main use is for you to craft rare items when you reach the endgame. This is why the currency is as highly regarded as it is. In fact, you will see a lot of trades taking place between players that deal in Exalted Orbs, which is a great way to highlight just how important they are.
If you are at the point where you don’t quite need higher end items yet, then you may find yourself trading in the Exalted Orbs that you have. This is a very effective method of getting your hands on equipment that can help you. A lot of items that are listed for trade are in Exalted Orbs, though whether you use them to get items or to acquire the orbs themselves will depend entirely on your situation.
With that being said, players who are strong or have plenty of PoE currency can use the Exalted Orbs that they have to get stronger rare items as well. You could try and use the orb itself, which will introduce a random affix to a rare item, if it doesn’t have six affixes attached to it already. Or, you could introduce higher end affixes via the crafting bench. This will cost you a certain amount of Exalted Orb for it to work. This way you can get special mods for meta-crafting that you wouldn’t normally be able to roll.
Other ways to get the items you need is through PoE Trade. The resource is a great place for you to either find the items you’re looking for or offload the ones that you don’t need anymore.
